Overweight bag fees suck. You can take out the extra stuff, but if you are already at the airport, where will you put it? It’s better not to overpack the luggage in the first place. A luggage scale can help prevent overpacking. Or to back up your argument with the gate agent:)
Here is the one I like:
This slick tool has up to 110 lb capacity. An LCD display, durable stainless steel design, auto shutoff , auto-lock display and a long life lithium battery make this scale a great investment.
Will you be pissed or hugely inconvenienced if you lose it?
If you said yes, put that item in the neck pouch. Wear the neck pouch under your shirt or sweater.
I think I found the right product for this:
This neck pouch lanyard does not contain a slash-proof wire, but the idea is security through obscurity – the thief shouldn’t even see this pouch. With RFID blocking material, information stored in your passport and credit card smart chips is safe.
Some scenes deserve to be captured with a better camera than the one in your phone. I don’t mind carrying my DSLR in a backpack, but do not want to rummage through other stuff in order to remove the camera.
Given that, Mountainsmith Borealis might just be the right backpack for this job!
The camera is stored separately from other stuff, and every piece of photographic equipment is protected with thick internal cushions. Nice.
